Catherine Place Garden Design
Garden design for Catherine Place
This garden is on the lower-ground-floor level of a London house, so it is to all intents and purposes a basement courtyard. It is overlooked by surrounding properties and tiny in comparison to the house itself. Originally, the only feature of merit was some established camellias.
Slatted screens of western red cedar wrap around the perimeter, creating a feeling of privacy and intimacy. The planting has to be shade tolerant and to look interesting at all times of the year : The mix includes evergreen ground-covering species such as luzula, euphorbia and pachysandra. Large evergreen shrubs were planted to give structure and help to soften the wall, including autumn flowering camellias, osmanthus and sarcococca. Stepping stones have been interplanted with baby’s tears(Soleirolia soleirolii)
