Landscape design in King’s Road, Chelsea
The development of the former Kings College site bounded by the Fulham and Kings roads has given RSA the opportunity to design a series of highly decorative courtyard spaces and a substantial urban park, part private, part public.
The development required to incorporate public access and the landscape proposals were developed to comply with this requirement while maximising the opportunities for the enjoyment of the open spaces for the residents and preserving the setting of the historic buildings. The impact of access and vehicle circulation was minimised by creating extended areas of public realm and pedestrian areas.
Where the New Build apartments opened up the space, a contemporary landscape was conceived over the basement and terminated in a pond, which under consultation with ecologists, enhanced habitat creation. The pond also formed the boundary with a publically accessed parkland environment to the north of the site. Proposals were made for this area to contain native hedges, wildflower planting and cover for wildlife.
